RE: Emerald Coast RV Beach Resort, *here right now*
If you head to Destin for dinner, try Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin. Go to the "village"(free parking), there are several places to eat(from pizza to prime rib), candy stores and unique shops. My wife and kids(9&7) love it. We ate at Poppies on Sunday and will probably head back over today or tomorrow for pizza.
It is also East of Destin and you would have about half the drive, than actually going into Destin. You may regret going all the way to Destin. The traffic is unbearable at times, it has taken us 45 minutes to go five miles before.

Karma
The philosophical explanation of karma can differ slightly between traditions, but the general concept is basically the same. Through the law of karma, the effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to them and others. The results or 'fruits' of actions are called karma-phala.
Be careful what you wish for.
RE: Newbie disregards the rules-Pays the price
I was starting to feel a sorry for you too, until you 'sorta' wished us all "ill will" with our night driving. Geez, we have thousands and thousands of safe, night time driving miles, and you come along and wish us "ill will."
OK, Lets see..."I wish you a slow leak in your spare tire that no one can locate, requiring you to keep refilling it." I'm sorry, but you asked for that.
Driving at night is just fine and thousands and thousands do this daily. I will admit, we really like our "docking light system" on our RV. They sure don't cost much and are fairly easy to add. Or, just use a spotter and some cheap radios. That's what we do it there's any doubt, in spite of, or in addition to, the lights .
You old timers are missing my point. The last time I looked this was the "Beginning RV" section. Not the "been there, done that, no better section.". The point I am trying to make is that a "NEW, Beginning RV'er" is better off staying off the road at night until they spent enough time behind the wheel.........
As far as wishing me a slow leak........Next time reflecting on where you are posting. "BEGINNING RV". We are looking for advice, not ridicule.......the "joke about the bodyshops was to the, again, old timers who had to make their point about how THEY can drive at night..I am aware that driving an RV at night is acceptable and commonly done without incidence.:B
Newbie Needs Acronyms/Abbrev's Spelled Out
I can't keep up.
OP, IMO, DW, etc??????????????????
Is there a RV.net dictionary I can refer to for all of these abbreviations....We're blogging not texting.......Writing is still envogue people.
RE: Never RVed before - What items might we not think to bring?
Add these on too:
IPOD, If TT has the connection for it.
Sam's Club or Wal-Mart Calling Card, cell phones don't work everywhere, if you need to make a call at a pay phone, they are going to hammer you if you don't have a calling card.
Since you are going to be gone for so long you should download the RVPARKREVIEWS.COM review worksheets:
http://www.rvparkreviews.com/downloads.php
That way if you are away from a computer for several days you can have your review sheets filled out ahead of time for potential future stops. They are good for identifying RV parks amenities: sewer, internet,etc..
Have fun, a year is a long time.........
RE: Newbie disregards the rules-Pays the price
Thanks to everyone for their support, criticism and humor regarding my "post of humility". I hope I reached one person who may not have known better.
I am pleased to announce that as of today, "RBABY" has been mended and is ready for a trip to beautiful Lake Seminole, aka Heaven on Earth.
RE: Worst Experience At a Dealership
Times are tough for these dealers, had a sale, lost a sale, notes are due, rent is due, light bill is due, insurance, etc..., needed to make a sale, people get angry when they lose things. He probably would have handled it differently had you just decided to pass on RVing altogether. As a rule of thumb USED is ALWAYS going to be much cheaper, just BUYER BEWARE.
Remember folks, that our marvelous RV's are made right here in America, in fact the whole industry, and its subsidiaries are U.S.A. made. No foreign companies listed in my Winnebago Manual, except maybe the radio. Buying new keeps the economy going.
Also, Dealers like to show you the high end stuff mainly just to show off the "latest goods". Just have fun looking at it next time.
RE: Newbie disregards the rules-Pays the price
For the record, yes the "rule" regarding driving at night is our family rule, but one that "Barney" reiterated over and over again during our driving instruction course at Lazydays. For all of you who feel driving at night is acceptable more power to ya...the repair body shops will welcome your habits.
Newbie disregards the rules-Pays the price
It is with great shame that I post this blog today. I am posting it with the hope that one of you will read it and pay very close attention to what I am going to say. On December 28th, my wife, 2 kids and I set out to take our "dream holiday RV" trip. Leaving from Tallahassee in our Class A 2008 35J Sightseer (Purchased new in August of 2007) and pulling 15'Boston Whaler we were heading to an ocean front campsite in Key West with overnights along the way in Punta Gorda and Ft. Lauderdale. Well we got a late start on the 28th and hit Tampa traffic, a complete nightmare. After being delayed for about 2 1/2hours I decided to pull over at the Cracker Barrel and grab some dinner. BAD CHOICE. By the time we finished dinner and headed to the "ENCORE' campground in Punta Gorda it was DARK outside. Sure enough when we pulled into the ENCORE campground there was no perimeter lighting and the roads were very narrow. As I proceeded to turn left onto the very narrow road our campsite was on, the right side of our Motorhome caught the side of a BLACK LANDSCAPING TRAILER that was parked on the side of the road. WE NEVER SAW IT. In the meantime the entire lower side of our RV was RIPPED OPENED up like a can opener had gotten the best of it. you can not imagine the heart-wrenched emotions this caused my family. Everyone was crying as if we had lost a loved one. It is still very difficult for me when I reflect back on that night. THIS WAS COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE. DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT. I BROKE THE RULES AND I HAVE PAID DEARLY FOR IT. I no accidents are going to happen. This was different we knew better. LESSON LEARNED. DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE. DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT. Needless to say we canceled our trip and after a couple of days at my wife's grandparents we headed back home. The trip home from there was a nightmare as well. The leveling jacks at our campsite in Clermont, FL. failed because the wrong fuse had been installed. The Leveling Jack company told Winnebago to replace the 5amp fuse with a 10amp fuse, Winnebage didn't do this and of course our Leveling Jacks failed. Winnebago did however reimburse us for the cost of having it repaired.
RE: Bunkhouse class A
For what it is worth we spent 5 months and drove hundreds of miles to see all of the different bunk bed models. Dollar for Dollar the coaches are very similar in quality.
Here are the two factors why we choose the Winnebago 35J.
1.) KING BED-If momma doesn't get a good night sleep, nobody is happy. A queen bed is not going to give you the rest you need, especially if you are use to sleeping in a king bed already. Sleep is everything when you are away from your day to day bed.
2.) KING BED-Every morning our kids (6f,9m) jump into bed with us and watch TV and chill out with us. You can't comfortable do that with a queen bed. Snuggling up with your kids in the morning in your RV is about the most relaxing thing you can possibly do to start your day.
There were other reasons but we truly love our motorhome. Off to Sugarloaf Key December 28th, for tubing, campfires and fishing.
btw the Winnebago/Itasca is the only bunk bed model that we found that has the king bed.
Stone Mountain Site 416
I just received and email that our reservation request for site #416 has been confirmed. Looking at the map these appears to be the best choice. We will be traveling in late March early April in a 35"MH with two kids 6 and 9. Can anyone give me feedback as to whether or not they think this site is a good one based on having stayed there in the past. I don't want to get there and say, "Oh, I wish I would have selected that site instead".

RE: Please help a newbie
The most sensible vehicle for you would be a 2008 Ford Explorer. It can be easily outfitted to flat tow at the dealer and has the third row seat. The most economical would be the Ford Escape, just might be a little tight. We have a 2008 35J and are in the same predicament, only our SUV can't be towed at all. As much research as I have done on this constantly pushed back into the direction of the Fords. We are going to pull the trigger right after the new year and order one or the other. You should stay under 5,000 total pounds for your towing purposed.
Good Luck.
